The Pareto Principle states that 20% of content gets 80% of the views.
That’s what I was taught in business school. And it’s extremely optimistic.
It’s more like 5% of content gets 95% of views.
You know why?
Because most content is BOOOOOOOORING.
Repetitive. Cliché. Dry as your mouth after a night out.
So if you want your content to be remembered, here’s what you need to do.
The secret to creating content that SELLS (without being annoying and salesy)
Step one: Stop writing like a wet noodle. Inject some dynamite into your copy.
Best way to do it?
Write like you're talking to a good friend. Keep it casual, keep it real. Like I'm doing right now.
Write like you’re sitting at a bar, cracking jokes, telling stories, talking to another human being.
That means a lot of short punchy sentences. From time to time, a sentence can go on for longer, like this one, but most will be short and sweet and to the point.
No massive Tolkien-sized paragraphs (ain’t nobody got time for that).
It needs to be easily digestible. Should be able to skim through it quickly.
Hooks That Hypnotise Your Readers
There’s no two ways about it, you’ve got to hook your reader AND keep him in that position.
You want to hypnotise them into never putting your stuff down. Each sentence should draw them in closer… and closer… and closer… that by the time the video is over, they barely even noticed the time pass.
So let’s not do any of this:
“We’re the best in the industry and we’ve been around for 20 years and we really care about you as a customer.”
That stuff is weaker than a decaf coffee.
It’s what every business says. And if you sound like everyone else, guess what? You get ignored like everyone else.
When someone lands on your article, they’re not ready to commit yet. They're just window shopping, seeing if anything catches their eye.
It’s up to you to sell them on the idea of sticking around and reading more.
Again, it’s the same thing I'm doing here. Subheads that reveal parts of the story and that hit the key points. But here's the real secret sauce:
You Need to Make It All About THEM.
Hate to break it to you, but nobody cares about you. Everyone only cares about themselves.
You need to make the reader the star of the show. Their problems. Their struggles. Their goals.
Only when they trust that you’re actually trying to help them, will they actually stick around to hear what you have to say.
So focus on how reading your stuff will help THEM out.
Skip The BS—Say What Needs to Be Said
Last thing I wanna cover.
Don't prance around their doubt and skepticism like a politician trying to answer a yes-or-no question. Hit them head-on.
People aren’t stupid.
Remember this quote by the wizard of advertising, David Ogilvy:
“The consumer is not a moron. She’s your wife.”
Call out what they’re already thinking. Address concerns with logic, empathy, and cold hard facts.
At the end of the day, just be real with people. And they’ll be real back.
Talk soon,
Dev
